Victoria Park Tunnel

DATE: 2008 - 2013
CLIENT: NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi
LOCATION: Auckland
CONTRACTOR: Fletcher Construction
ESTIMATED COST: $340M

Victoria Park Tunnel is a 450-metre ‘cut and cover’ tunnel next to the Victoria Park Viaduct, designed to take three lanes of northbound traffic.

The motorway was widened through St Marys Bay by one lane in each direction, for a total of 10 lanes. A bus shoulder lane was re-established in the citybound direction. At the end of the project, the existing Victoria Park Viaduct was reconfigured to accommodate four lanes of southbound traffic.

The Victoria Park Tunnel project was designed to remove the last major traffic bottleneck on Auckland’s central motorway network and unlock the potential of other significant investment in recent years to improve travel reliability to and around Auckland’s central business district.

The project was prioritised as a road of national significance to support New Zealand’s economic growth and improve productivity. During its construction, the project also delivered significant economic benefits by maximising the local supply chain for supplies and services, with a particular focus on import replacement and developing small and medium-sized businesses.
